Season ticket holder for 12 years. Been watching Wednesday since 1985.  Spent 2 years - 1999-2001 - editing the Sheffield Wednesday fanzine Spitting Feathers and the next 5 years contributing regularly to Out of the Blue.  Many people have chosen to take great offence at what I have written in the past and most just aren't clever enough to see when a piece has been written simply to create interest and discussion.  Quite often they mistake what I say for what I believe.

The sacking of Paul Sturrock: Am the only one who is pleased by this?

Sturrock Out?  About time!

There seems to have been an outcry over the recent sacking of Paul Sturrock as manager of Sheffield Wednesday Football Club.  The question I’d like to have answered is: Why?  Through the pages of Out of the Blue I have, for well over a year, been demanding the head of this dour, limited manager.  Two seasons ago he did reasonably well to get us promoted, especially when you consider that at no time were we one of the 6 best teams in that division.  Many times that season I left games wondering how the hell we had won.  You may say that’s the hallmark of a good team; I say bull.  Yes, if you have the odd performance where you win without deserving to that is the mark of a good team.  To win so many games without being the best team (as we did in that promotion season) is, at best, the mark of a very lucky team.

I often remarked to colleagues throughout season ’04-’05 that we were not up to scratch.  The trouble was that I, like so many others, chose to ignore the blatantly obvious signs of the troubles that were to come (and that we are now experiencing) and look instead at the improbable position we found ourselves in.  That season’s success owed so much to luck and so little to Sturrock’s ‘genius’.  Owe how foolish we all were to sing that tripe about not needing Mourinho.  You’re quite right though, we don’t need Mourinho we need a f*****g Messiah right now, someone who can actually walk on water such is the mire we are now in.  Forget for one minute the fortuitous nature of our elevation two seasons ago and look at the other miserable failings of Sturrock.

Craig Rocastle: Oh dear.  Truly, truly awful and yet Sturrock not only gave him the important central midfield role but then chose to question our behaviour when we stated the bleeding obvious by booing the 2-legged donkey off the field.  That it took so long for Sturrock to realise that this worthless player wasn’t up to it was a crime.

High tempo football: never been seen in S6 under Sturrock and yet he tried to build a reputation on, and constantly referred to, the need for high tempo football especially from the first whistle.  Could it be that Sturrock had no idea how to motivate a team to play high tempo?  He was responsible for training and yet all we got on a match day was naive, negative, boring bull.  For Christ’s sake we started running the ball into corners to waste time with 10 minutes remaining in games.  That’s right. 10 F*****G MINUTES!  Can you get more negative than that?

The quality of our football:
this term and last has been nothing short of woeful.  I know we are playing in a higher division but come on.  There is nothing of any real quality in this division.  Our side churns out the most uninspired, turgid crap week after week and nothing changes.  From the start we lack pace, direction, desire, application and motivation.  All are things that should be instilled by the man in charge.  What we have been treated to this term and last is no better than the bull we watched under Yorath, Shreeves, Wilson or Jewell.  In fact I think several of those past managers actually produced far better sides than the one we’re currently watching.  Oh how we would laugh now if we could go back in time and listen to those whingers who hounded Francis out of a job.  I know it’s easy to say with hindsight but I feel it is fair to state that the people who should shoulder much of the blame for our current crises is in fact we, the fans.  Had we not hounded out the best manager at Hillsborough in the last 15 years (Francis) we would not be in this sorry state now where the vast majority see fit to revere a limited man who has risen to God-like status on the back of a great deal of good-fortune and a group of fans who have become so accustomed to failure that they are willing to ignore all the basic facts and refuse to acknowledge the truth.

Poor Mr Hammond. As is often the case in his meandering and shallow contributions to 'Out of the Blue', he has completely missed the point. Yes, Trevor Francis was a tremendous manager who should never have been sacked. I was one of his few supporters as the axe loomed closer. Yet nearly ten years on such observations are hardly useful. Paul Sturrock was a great boss producing so much from so little. The dire financial situation at Hillsborough dictated that such sub-standard signings as Rocastle were relied upon - it is a testament to Sturrock's genius that such unconvincing footballers (there were many more, most signed by Turner) were galvanised together sufficiently to contrive that unlikely triumph at Cardiff. That season 2005/06 didn't end in an instant return to the third tier is again about Sturrock's flair in somehow transforming limited funds into fifty-two points.
The villian in all this, Mr Hammond is the small-minded Dave Allen. He will not consider overtures by those clearly better equipped financially to cope (e.g Ken Bates). I admit that Wednesday would have struggled throughout this season but I feel that relegation would have been avoided once again. These days a budget of 500,000 will have little impact and Small, Lunt, Folly are only slightly better than the existing squad. Bougherra was though an inspired signing.
The sacking of Sturrock was the petulant, reckless act of a power-mad egotist whose arrogance and ineptitude will seriously damage our club. The point you miss, Mr Hammond is that Sturrock is the only decent manager to grace S6 since Francis! A twenty seven million debt coupled to Messrs Ritchie, Laws or whoever is a dangerous combination probably inviting relegation. I'd give the job to Sean McTosser - he'll cost the least money and will no doubt be so weak that he'll allow Allen to pick the team. What the hell, SWFC are doomed anyway!

Thanks a million Mr Allen, and Dan, try not to spout such absolute nonsense.

I liked TF, but he was never the wonder manager some people seem to remember. In the beginning TF inherited a good team, which in fairness was so together, they almost didn't need a manager. Trevor did improve this side with the introduction of the wonderful Waddle. But after our trips to Wembley, he seemed intent on moving the side on, being worried that the side was too old. In the end he became fixated with signing midfielders and playing them out of position. I can remember being up at Newcastle and puzzling over his decision to bring on Ian Taylor and play him on the wing when we also had Andy Sinton to do the job (another player who was bought and made to play in a way that did not suit him. In the end we played in such a way we spent 10 minutes passing around in front of the other teams defence whilst deciding who was going to have a shot. I threw my season ticket away after we got stuffed 6 something against Forest at home. In the end TF lost the team, and the style of play we had become used to. The football became slow and laboured. Shame really as he had potential.

Well said, the Barnsley game was the first time I've ever left a game early when in with a cahnce of getting a result. The football was truly turgid! As a man Sturrock was excellent but boy he was driving me away.

Couldn't have said it better myself... I don't think we've played attractive football for a while yet.
"Give it time, a five-year plan", "all our players are injured"... enough!
I didn't see much charisma in Paul.
Now it's time to explain how we've gotten 10 points out of 12 since he's left? It doesn't seem like the players cared too much, and we don't really know what goes on in the dressing room.

Time to give Brian Laws (not my first choice) some support, and although Dave Allen is a bit of a plonker, I think he does make some logical business decisions.

Spot on! Sturrock got lucky with the loan signings of O'Brien and Jones in the promotion season and when they departed the ream almost blew it. He got lucky with the triple substitution at Cardiff. He got lucky again when bringinging in Carson and Bischoff to save us last season

I have to agree here for the basic reason that it is all true, but fairplay to Rocastle he was brilliant in the Play-Off Final! I just hope people would realise and forget it and get behind Brian.
